In addendum to HD radio article: I have now given the HD radio a proper Turing Test (not to be confused with turnip testicles). I have discovered for myself that HD Radio truly does have CD quality sound. I had a bit of a long drive this morning and periodically changed between the two as a test. Both sounded great!

At one point Cher's "Believe" came on the radio and I could hear the clippy bass that is so prevalent in today's "club" music! I could hear clipping over the radio! We will be hard pressed to get much better than this! (Watch - 2 years right?)

Ok, so check this out. We recently bought a used van. Nothing fancy, but still very nice for us. I found out two things since my purchase that the sales guy didn't even know about.

1. Speed based volume auto-adjust. Yup, as you hit higher speeds the stereo system ups its volume so you can still hear over the extra noise. Cool feature.

2. It has an HD radio!!! Didn't realize this until we were flipping through stations while parked. All kinds of data started showing up. It was really cool. It does sound better, too. At first I thought it was just better speakers than our older car, but that is not the only reason. Very cool!

Hey, great article, I learned some things.

I think having the playlist on the website is fine although we are getting spoiled in this digital age when our car stereos have the song playing info on them, but it makes for dangerous driving when a person is reading the little font on the stereo instead of keeping eyes on the road.

Honestly Flass, I couldn't agree more.

I kinda see it like OpenOffice or Google. They go out of their way to provide things that make your life better. As a result, I just want to find a way to thank them. So I pump both and give money to the first.

Google can pay for itself.

I find that when I really like a band or a singer, I go out of my way to try to support them... like buy their cd's as gifts to give to friends.

Radio head's comment about having a following is partially valid, but bands that have zero following find a way to promote their music that wouldn't be so easy otherwise, so it is kind of a two way street... in the old days very few got any kind of radio play.

The only downside of Rhapsody was that you had to be sitting at your machine to hear it. Which wasn't a problem at the time but it's a bigger issue now. Instead I sit and watch movies while I work. Usually rented off iTunes or TV Shows downloaded from Amazon.

Brent1 loves that ninja guy! I thought it was a little entertaining myself but eventually I got a little drained by all the jump cuts.

Anyway, if you're only going to hang around for 2 or 3, I'd suggest Elephant Evasion and Brents In SPACE!!!! They're honestly the best ones and I still giggle inanely when I hear them.

Honestly, I haven't found a good podcast show that entertained me past 2 or 3 podcasts. I was listening to that funny ninja guy that was featured in iTunes for about a week. But that got old.

Top Hits USA, huh. 55 bucks for 40 songs per genre? Considering I only listen to a couple of genres that wouldn't be my kind of deal. Might look into this Rhapsody program, though.

@DJ4 Aacramento Weddings

Does it just provide the Top 40 songs? Or do you get more beyond that? I used Rapsody for a while and got access to tons more at 20/month.

Still, it wasn't great quality, so depending.

I've been tracking the music download world since Napster. It seems far more common for teenagers (well, 12-23 y/o) to download music illegally. After that, people tend to buy their stuff.

Not sure if they learn the value of hard work, respond to frontal lobe development or just actually have money.

Surprisingly, iTunes hasn't had too much an effect. Maybe Amazon will. They give more freedom and worry less about your ability to handle a computer. Not generally a problem for teens.

Oh, and if you missed the update at the end, note that this article has been republished on ExpertArticles.com.

I've never needed to download any of my music, because there is a service (on Compact Disc) which provides me with all the Top 40 songs (in every genre of music)....its called Top Hits USA.

My cost per month is $55, but saves me HUNDREDS of dollars by not having to buy individual artist's CDs.

Hey, ouch.

I thought I was really good at the violin. I just hated the new teacher. She was obsessed with how I held my feet. Wasn't so much a fan of that at 8 y/o. :P

I love you.

As the proud mother of one of the Brents, I have to comment that I loved the wonderful mother's day card on the cover of the website. It was awesome. I love the show. Having raised Brent 2, I can say that he is well qualified to write about music and boxers. I loved the violin concert (third grade) where he got tired of holding the violin with his left hand and using the bow with his right hand so he switched in the middle of the concert. It sounded dreadful. Thus you can see that he is very knowledgeable about what sounds really great and what is horrible--from personal experience. Not long after that concert, he decided he had had enough of the violin. It really was for the best.

@Kloutier

I'm hoping to. I'll need to get hold of some lapel mics, which I don't usually keep around. Radio usually doesn't need to hide the microphone.

I do have a line on them though. After that I'll probably need to do some noise control and some tweaks. But that's the fun part. :)

Kloutier, believe me, there's much more. From the exact definition of bit rates to the complexities of encoding, it can get very, very, intense.

There are actually several dozen ways to encode an MP3 file. The better encoders can be costly but they utilize better methods of deciding what to throw out. The file size is the same, but you notice less quality loss.

Oh, and I added pictures. It was bugging me.

Who's idea was it?

I remember. It was yours.

You showed up at my apartment--microphone and hard drive in tow--and immediately started in on the idea.

After that we recorded a couple station IDs (the files we haven't been able to find recently) on my system, rather than going down to the studio. Easier when you're recording 7 second things.

I should add to this.

I recently upgraded to Vegas 8, though Brent1 still uses 7. No major audio updates to 8 (unless you're used to ProTools, in which case you'll be happy). But the video side, long incorporated (since v4 at least) got some heavy upgrades. HD, Blu-Ray, multiple camera workflow. Some very, very cool stuff. If you work with video.

That's the other nice thing about Vegas. Audio and Video in one software package. Full editing, full effects, full exports. . .for both sides. In other packages you have to do them separately, dragging video/audio files back and forth. Not so here.

Makes me wonder why no one else has caught on. . .
